Exploring Koh Tao: A Comprehensive Guide to Viewpoints, Beaches, Dining, and Remote Work Spots

Koh Tao, a stunning island in Thailand’s Gulf of Thailand, is renowned for its captivating scenery, vibrant marine life, and welcoming expat community. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a beach lover, a food enthusiast, or someone who needs a peaceful spot to work remotely, Koh Tao is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy.

Bear in mind that, like many Thai islands, Koh Tao has changed because of its emphasis on the expat community. While there are great yoga spots, smoothie shops, and hotels, it is always important to look for ways to support the local community. This might mean staying in a homestay or being sure not to litter when enjoying the hikes or beaches.

Koh Tao's inexpensive Open Water Scuba Certification draws a lot of crowds. However, there's a ton to do above the water as well. Here’s a guide so you can make the most of your island getaway, featuring the best viewpoints, beaches, dining options, and remote work spots:

How to Get to Koh Tao, Thailand

How to Get to Koh Tao by Plane

The most popular flights to Koh Tao are into Koh Samui. After the flight, you can take a short ferry to Koh Tao. This is generally the most expensive way to get to Koh Tao, but it is also the most direct.

However, not many people realize that you can also fly into Surat Thani to get to Koh Tao. The ferry is a bit longer (4 hours), but these flights tend to a bit cheaper and easier to book.

How to Get to Koh Tao from Bangkok by Ferry

If you have the time, I recommend taking the night ferry from Bangkok to Koh Tao. Night buses are pretty standard for anyone backpacking around Thailand or Southeast Asia, so it wasn't too bad. When you're in the budget traveler mentality, it's also worth saving on a night of accommodation.

To get to Koh Tao, most of. the travel is on a pretty comfortable bus followed by a short ferry ride. As with all night buses, I recommend packing a sleeping eye mask, neck pillow, and snacks.

For people who like to be in the middle of the action: Savage Hostel

Savage Hostel is right in the middle of Sairee, also known as the area with all of the bars. It is right on the beach, which makes it easy for those looking to scuba dive, snorkel, or lounge. They have a rooftop pool, pool table, and other great shared spaces for travelers!

Koh Tao’s beaches are some of the island’s biggest draws, each offering its own unique charm and activities.

Rent snorkels (or bring your own) and explore the vibrant marine life around the shore, following a scenic loop. There is a rock that people like to cliff jump off of, but be careful if you choose to climb it.

  • Aow Leuk: If you are willing to wake up early, you can watch baby sharks swim in the shallow water at Aow Leuk. It is an adorable and magical experience for animal lovers.

  • Mango and Lighthouse Bays: Both bays are beautiful but can be tricky to reach due to difficult roads. The best way to access them is by boat, but, if you have a group, you can take a boat taxi out for the day. Their relative inaccessibility ensures they are quieter, making them ideal for a peaceful beach day.
